Retirement of MCpl Martin St-Louis, LINEMAN

MCpl Martin St-Louis is retiring from the CAF on 9 Feb 2020, with over 18 years of service. His full retirement message is available here.

As per Martin's request, an informal DWD ceremony is being held on 30 Jan starting at 1200 at the Limestone City Legion Branch #560 (734 Montreal Street, Kingston, Ontario). Congratulatory messages are welcome and can be sent no later than 24 Jan to Stephane Hache (stephane.hache4@forces.gc.ca).

Retirement of MWO Herb Postill, C&E Kit Shop Manager and LINEMAN

While already retired from his 23 years of service as a lineman and 28 years in the Forces overall, Herb is now retiring from his post as the C&E Museum's Kit Shop Manager. While surely a loss for the Kit Shop and their customers after 15 years, he and his wife Wendy are eager to travel the Atlantic provinces and United States (while maybe spending some time wood-working with his extensive set-up)

A social gathering for Herb is being held at 1400 hrs on 10 January 2020 at the ANAF Club on Gore Road, Kingston, ON. UPDATE: Ron During's treatment

In a small update, Mike Walsh tells us that Ron During is on his third round of chemotherapy and tolerating it very well after being diagnosed with abdominal cancer earlier this year. Blood work, ECGs, and other tests have come back excellent, though the nurses have been after him a little to drink more fluids!

David (Rick) Richard Guthrie, 1949 - 2019, LINEMAN

As we get ready to celebrate the holiday with our families, we regret that another member of our line family is no longer with us. Rick was 70 when he passed away last October in BC, having joined the trade following a eventful career as an infantryman.

A celebration of life will be held early 2020 and details will be posted at a later time. His full obituary is available on the Vancouver Sun or on our Memorial page. May our brother rest in peace.

Wayne Stevens Devereaux, 1966 - 2019, LINEMAN

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Wayne Devereaux earlier this week. A full obituary is still forthcoming (Update on 22 Nov: Obituary is now available here), but those wishing to pay their respects may attend a celebration of life on Sunday November, 24th from 15:00 - 17:00 at James Reid Funeral Home Reception Centre (1900 John Counter Blvd, Kingston, ON). Please enter through the rear of the building to the reception center.

In lieu of flowers, Wayne's family has asked that donations be made to Soldier On.

Free access to Ontario Provincial Parks and CFOne cards for parents

Some news that may be of interest to our members is that the Ontarian government is now offering free weekday day use of 340 provincial parks across the province for serving and retired members. The full press release can be read here, and follows suit from offering free recreational fishing for military members earlier this year.

Also, CFMWS is now allowing parents of military members to obtain CFOne cards. These cards allow accumulation of CANEX Rewards points, access to military discounts listed at cfappreciation.ca, free online fitness and nutrition plans, and more.

Pte Porter Memorial Ceremony

77 Line Regiment is hosting the annual Pte Porter Memorial Ceremony at 1000hrs on 8 Nov. All fellow Linemen in the area are invited to the cairn in front of the Communications & Electronics Museum (95 Craftsman Blvd, Kingston, ON) to pay respects to our fallen comrades. It is expected to be zero degrees with a possiblity of snow, so military dress will be combats with rain jacket, touque, and gloves.

Ron During diagnosed with cancer

Mike Walsh writes to inform us that fellow Lineman Ron During has been recently diagnosed with abdominal cancer. Though the extent of it and treatment have not been determined, Ron is nonetheless in good spirits and is ready to kick cancer's ass!

In the meantime, he has asked everyone to refrain from contacting him directly, but future updates will be provided as they are recevied. The full message can be read here. Our thoughts are with both Ron and his partner Debbie during this time.

Lineman BBQ at CFSCE

Sgt Yan Roy is putting together a BBQ at CFSCE Line Training on 25 Oct at 1200 hrs and invites all linemen in the Kingston area to attend. The cost is $7 for 2 burgers/hot dogs, a pop, and a bag of chips. Questions can be directed to Yan himself here, and he looks forward to hosting you!

New website now live!

As you can see, the CAFL Webmaster has completed the new website, first mentioned at last year's annual general meeting. This redesign aims chiefly to make Association information easier to find, relay current events effectively to members, and use more visuals to show just exactly what the trade is and does. Comments and constructive input on the new design are welcome, along with any problems members encounter when using it.

Results from the 21st Petawawa Branch Fishing Derby

The 21st Petawawa Branch Fishing Derby at Corry Lake was a huge success! The weather was nice and it was great to see members of our lineman family from all over.

This charity event helped raise $1000 to the Soldier On program for ill and injured veterans, with special mention to Patrick Carson from Anixter who donated a hand-crafted games table to the raffle. Thank you all for coming!

Reminder: C&E Association Netherlands battlefield study tour

A reminder that the next battlefield study tour still has some spots left! This amazing opportunity starts 30 Apr 2020 and allows members to take a trip through the Netherlands, experiencing the 75th anniversary of the Nazi occupation being lifted where the C&E branch played a major role. More details and registration can be found here. There is also a beer to commemorate the occasion, with a portion of the proceeds helping to send veterans on the tour.

A collaborative research project at 77 Line Regiment has yielded an impressive 49-page document on the history of the line trade. Ranging 1867 to the present day, this quick read serves as a commemoration of a trade that has contributed to every major Canadian victory yet most know little about.

Petawawa Branch meeting and fishing derby

The Petawawa Branch held a meeting to vote in new branch committee members (congratulations!) and plan the yearly Petawawa Fishing Derby. Minutes of the meeting can be found here.

The new Veteran’s Service Card (VSC) helps you stay connected to military and veteran support programs during your transition from military to civilian life. This card also recognizes your previous service as a Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) member. Those who have completed basic training and been honourably released from the CAF are eligible and encouraged to apply for a card here.

Donations for Karen Eichler

Lineman Richard Eichler's wife Karen was diagnosed with cancer in December and a GoFundMe page has been set up by his sister to help. Karen and Richard live in Gander, Newfoundland with their 4 children. The funds raised will help their family with family care, incidental costs, and travel to St. John's for treatment. Any support to help those who support our line family is appreciated.
